Serving adults and teens.
Thomas Mittelsteadt is a dually-licensed practitioner and provides counseling for individuals who are struggling with substance abuse and behavioral addictions, as well as many other forms of mental health issues. A person may find themselves struggling with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. Everyone knows about drug and alcohol addiction, but there are many behavioral addictions as well, like hoarding, gambling addiction, sex addiction, computer/gaming addiction and many others. In the process of helping with the addictive issues, anxiety, OCD, depression and anger will also be reduced. Trauma can also be present, and I work with clients who have experienced various forms of trauma and/or are experiencing PTSD.
What MJM Behavioral is NOT: A hospital or large company that is mired in bureaucracy, and keeps its patients within their network of providers. MJM Behavioral Health does not use cookie cutter approaches that have not been very effective.
My approach to counseling is based in Adlerian Therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS). As additional tools I will include CBT, DBT, REBT, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, Solution Focused Therapy, psychoeducation, client empowerment, relapse prevention, aftercare and crisis management.
I believe that the client is the expert of themselves and that I am a guide in their journey to self discovery, well-being, happiness and positive mental health. I take a holistic approach with my clients, meaning we will explore all aspects of their health (mental, emotional, spiritual and physical). 90% of client change happens outside the therapy session, and I believe that individuals will behave as they think. This means that if someone thinks negatively, then negative outcomes will happen more times than not. If someone thinks positively, then more positive outcomes can become a reality.
My focus is to help individuals heal themselves from within, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. I achieve this by providing a neutral, safe space, listening to your concerns, and customizing a treatment plan for each client.
I work alongside the client in a nonjudgmental way, and being curious about a person's parts (thoughts and feelings). We will focus on finding out what those parts of the personality are, how they do their jobs, and integrate these parts to the Self.
Willpower alone won't cut it. To manage addiction, depression, anxiety etc., one must overlay positive, healthy new habits onto the negative old habits. We must get to the root of what is causing these behaviors in the first place.
